“She was honoured for the active role she played in mobilising women to join the liberation movement in the 1940s. She rose through the ranks to the position of Chairlady of Chifubu Constituency. She became Secretary for Copperbelt Province and was arrested, harassed and tortured on many occasions by the colonial police. She was fired from her teaching career because of being a political activist. In 1963, she was sent to Tanzania for a Women’s conference and a few days after her return, her husband was assassinated in his office in Katete in Eastern Province in the presence of her son, Peter.”
