“Captain Brian Chabwela Mwanza was born on 24th January 1970 in Washington DC, in the United States of America. Captain Brian Chabwela Mwanza is being recommended for an award for acts bravery. In 2001, Captain Mwanza, whilst traveling between Kabwe and Kapiri Mposhi noticed that a bus full of passengers had plunged in to Mulungushi River. He courageously braved the water current which had resulted from a storm and dived into the river supported by a rope in an effort to rescue the passengers who were trapped in the bus at the bottom of the river. Though he did not manage to rescue all the passengers, most of them were rescued. The officer demonstrated gallantry and value for the lives of the passengers at the expense of his own comfort and safety. Further, it is noteworthy that Captain Mwanza also rendered loyal and distinguished service to the Government of the Republic of Zambia. He was attested into the Zambia National Service on the 24th of December, 1990 and was later commissioned to the rank of Second Lieutenant on the 10th of June, 1992. He thereafter rose to the rank of Captain.”
