He was the care-taker president of the United National Independence Party (UNIP) when the incumbent Kenneth David Kaunda was jailed in Salisbury (Harare) for political reasons. He abdicated the UNIP presidency and gave it to Kenneth Kaunda upon the latter’s release from prison and occupied the position of National Secretary of UNIP. He served as Minister Without Portfolio, Minister of Justice, Prime Minister and Secretary General of UNIP. He was a Lawyer.”
